    they are all worthless

  2. The Haad martial artist

i wouldnt say there are any arts truely worthless for self defence ery art has somthing to offer the worst for self defence are probaly in my oppinion

xma- since they dont emphasise slf defence

capiora- since its techniques were based of of the idea that the slaves hands were cuffed an well ours arent.also most schools prefer art over self defence hich is just fine

fencing- since u don walk around with a sword most of the time in fact most weapons arts can be put here

wrestling for lack of strategy dealing with weapons while being so in close

these arent truely worthless since they can all acomplish alot especialy if one trains for self defence using these arts however if ur emphasis is self defence then these are less likly to get the same self defence senario results as syestema, krav maga, hagganah,, wemens self defence, hapkido, self defence training style etc.

I have been doing martial arts since i was 7 yrs old and i have found that there is no “worthless” martial art it is all based on what you find to fit your likeing not what looks good or seems “cool” but what style works for you…Ive been in Muai Thai and Jui Jitsu for about 12 yrs now and i had tryed several other styles prior to settlein on these two and the ones that i have chose i chose because they fit my body type mind set and i found it to come easy to me in training….so to me NO there is no worthless martial art for self defense.

    hope this helps.

there are no worthless martial arts only worthless teachers any martial art ( this includes fencing and all those listed by a previus poster) can be tought to be used effectively in a self defense scenerio( some creative thinking may be necessary)

In my opinion, I think they are all worthless. If you think you can kick someone’s butt, you go into a fight with the wrong attitude. When you are up against an attack from the criminal element, you start off on the wrong foot and the fight goes downhill from there. Surprise is on their side and you can easily be overwhelmed before your skills can spring into action.

My solution: be proficient in the use of a handgun and carry one legally.

    as the haad said
there arn’t any useless martial arts
but (his mentioned arts) for the most part wouldn’t fair as well in self defence against eg krav mega.

all martial arts can save your life or get you killed, easy as that.

the worst martial art of all, is the fake instructors who make these kids believe they are good

  7. Philip

the one that you go to but not really study. if you dont practice and help yourself be better, it doesnt matter what you take, its just plain worthless.

  8. Tom T

    krav maga is completely useless

  9. Rob B

There are no worthless arts but there are instructors and schools whose training is of less value than others.

Comparing styles of arts for self defense is like comparing brands of pencils for algebra. True, there are some differences but the biggest issue is the skill of the user.

Soft Qi Gong – Basically you sit in meditation with your eyes closed and Breath deep.
It is Meant to increase your Lung capacity.

  11. Kurt

Well how about “extreme” martial arts, or “movie martial arts”.

Things that are specifically designed towards looking cool and sexy, that should definitely land you in trouble in a real situation. So yeah, totally useless for self-defense.

But really, who wouldn’t love to pull off a back flip followed by a roundhouse kick to the face.

  12. Peachy

Qui Na is not a martial art. Handguns can be taken away, or malfunction, and that snubby in the ankle holster can seem far away. Wu shu maybe?

  13. Irony Man

To be effective for self-defence, the martial arts must prepare you different scenarios.

If you learn Judo but your enemy don’t allow you to get close by using alot of kicks. Then your skill will be worthless.

If your enemy is too heavy and you cannot throw him to the ground.
Then your skill will be worthless.

If you learn kick boxing but your enemy throw you to the ground and you don’t have effective counter measures. Then your skill will be worthless.

Therefore, it all depend on your training.

The chinese regard shaolin as the origin of all martial arts because shaolin is the first school that mix different martial arts to form an effective self-defense. They have done that hundreds of years ago before westerners come up with the word MMA – mix martial arts.
Shaolin martial arts consists of punching, kicking, grapping and throwing. They also teach how to increase the attack power, speed, agility and balancing. On top of that, they also teach weapons like staff, sabre, sword and spear etc.

The reason the monks come up with MMA is because the shaolin monks are wise enough to know that one martial art alone is not effective for self defence.

any that emphasize the knee to the groin movement. WHOS BALL$ ARE THAT WIDE OPEN!!!

  15. Billy M

Learned well, any of the martial arts will prove very helpful in case of the need to defend oneself against physical attack. None of them is worth a shlt against intellectual assault.

  16. cavsargetank

This would be one of the most difficult questions to answer. While fencing usually requires a sword of some type. It also involves the use of a dagger or mercy. And the striking points are more towards killing than defense. Yet the defensive maneuvers make a person far more harder to hit than in boxing. So in the end it becomes a matter of what you know plus what you can do with it.

  17. Bujinkan Ninja

It’s the same answer as when someone asks what the best martial art is. There aren’t any. All martial arts can be used for self defense with the right training.

  18. i am legend

All martial arts are excellent for self defense if taught properly and learned properly ….All can be worthless if not taught properly and not learned properly .

It comes down to who is teaching and who is learning not the martial art itself

  19. Desk3Bound

As has already been proven and accepted since the early ’70s, the worth of a style depends on the practitioner.

  20. jamesf24

There are worthless instructors, but there are no worthless martial arts.

  21. Darren J

The one in which you don’t dedicate yourself in learning. A martial art is only as good as the amount of effort you put into it.

What most people don’t do is acknowledge the difference between martial art styles, sports fighting styes, and combat styles.

All will get you in better shape (which is important) and increase your fighting skills…thus, none are worthless.

However, initially martial art styles were developed for art performances with fighting scenes in front of a large audience. Thus, they usually have grand and flashy movements (i.e., jumping and spinning moves). Not surprising, martial art styles are still used most effectively in movies (e.g., Kung Fu, Karate) and public demostrations (e.g., Aikido).

Many of the classic martial arts have evolved into hybrid sports fighting styles and combat styles. Tae Kwon Do is a hybrid martial art/sports fighting style. Kempo Karate is a good attempt to transform a martial art into a combat style.

But, thanks to the UFC, we clearly see what happens when you put a martial artist in with a sports fighter. After the UFC had been around a couple years, you rarely saw a ‘classic’ martial art in the fighter comparison charts. They all became mixed martial artists…which really means they were a sports fighter…either a stand up sports fighter (Muay Thai, boxing) or a grappling sports fighter (BJJ or wrestling).

Not surprisingly, the most successful sports fighting styles come from combat styles. Muay Thai is basically a neutered version of the combat style called Muay Boran.

Anyway, going back to the UFC we can learn a couple things about what works. The obvious things are conditioning and technique. But notice that the UFC has weight divisions…that means SIZE and STRENGTH matters. Imagine Brock Lesnar fighting any lightweight fighter. Another thing is look at what “DIRTY MOVES” the “no holds barred” UFC has barred: fish-hook, groin damage, kicking while down, punch to the back of the head, eye gouging, weapons.

These are combat moves…too devastating for the sports fighting environment…basically, they would nullify most ground fighting. Why bother trying to ‘roll’ someone into a submission when you can just poke their eyes, grab their groin, etc. and win the fight?

And weapons. People like to under-value how much of an advantage that weapons help you. If nearly any person with a gun got the drop on Brock Lesnar, the person would win.

And that leads me to my next point, most people aren’t willing to inflict major damage. Generally, that’s a good thing, but in a self-defense (read ‘combat’) situation, you had better be WILLING to hurt, maim, kill.

Next: You’ll see in psfights.com that the defender usually has little time to prepare mentally for the combat, and thus, gets defeated…so you must mentally prepare yourself beforehand. You must get the ability to go from 0 to 60 in a split second. So when your alarm goes off in the morning, GET UP…increase your ablility of focus on the moment…and other exercises like that.

If you are REALLY want to prepare to defend yourself in combat situations: get big and strong, practice dirty moves until they are second nature, carry weapons at all times, and be ready and willing to really hurt someone at the drop of a hat.

Although it is hard to find a combat school, classic martial art and sport fighting schools have a lot to offer. Because of the UFC, most ‘classic’ martial art schools have incorporated a lot more sparring and sport fighting techniques. And some MMA schools offer a bit of real combat fighting via offensive weaponry, but really, there isn’t a real school for combat fighting…maybe in special units of the military.

Ummm, Krav Maga considers itself to be a combat style, but there is debate on that. To be fair, it is hard to prove a combat style since you’ll go to jail for hurting/maiming/killing someone…also, lots of police and such train at Krav Maga schools.

A poor carpenter finds fault with his tools-the art is only as good as you are.

  24. Captain Feathersword

All depends on the circumstances in which the MA is used.
I prefer Judo and Wing Chun for a well rounded street MA.

The only MA I feel that is worthless is Krav Maga—-decent concepts but too much aggression. Restrained aggression—being “lite” on your feet and being relaxed are the keys to superior fighting skills.

Capoiera. its the only martial art that i dont like. Sorry guys. i dont think its 100% worthless……..but. comon!!!

  26. tismesandra

BJJ you can not in no way defend yourself with this art. the perfect possition for submission is not worth your life and if the guy has a gun you are dead. there is no room for the gentile art when your life depends on it. you are on the ground you lose.
cops and the military are all taking bjj but they dont realise they will get their guns taken away from their perp and that the style is obsolete.
    just like capoera
